The VPW New York State Championship has been defined by fierce battles, and reigning champion Rex Lawless is making sure the tradition continues. Since defeating Jack Tomlinson to capture the gold, Lawless has turned back every challenger, including “The Specialist” Giorgio Lawrence this past August. But the champion isn’t slowing down – in fact, he’s turning up the heat.
Lawless has issued another Open Challenge for Haunted Ground, keeping fans and wrestlers alike guessing who will step forward. His message has been clear: Lawless doesn’t care if the opponent comes from inside VPW or beyond – he’s ready to defend his title against anyone, anywhere.
That unpredictability has set the VPW locker room abuzz. Could a former champion like Eric James rise to the occasion and attempt to reclaim his spot at the top? James has the experience and ring savvy to give Lawless a fight for the ages, plus he has a victory over the current champion. Or perhaps the challenge could lure back a veteran like Jay Delta, who has the pedigree and championship history to stand toe-to-toe with the reigning titleholder.
And then there’s the wildcard factor – outsiders with something to prove. Just as Georgio Lawrence stepped up and gave Lawless a test in August, another hungry competitor from outside the VPW roster may seize the moment. With Lawless’ history as a trainer and mentor, it’s not unthinkable that a former student could answer the call, looking to shock the wrestling world by toppling their teacher.
Whoever takes on the challenge, one thing is certain: Rex Lawless is determined to prove that the VPW New York State Championship belongs to him – and him alone.
